One of the main uses of TiO2 powder is as a pigment in paints and coatings. In a study published in 2022 in the journal Particle and Fibre Technology, researchers examined the impact of maternal exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles in newborn offspring mice. They found that “a chronic exposure to TiO2 NPs during pregnancy alters the respiratory activity of offspring, characterized by an abnormally elevated rate of breathing.” Breathing was also shown to be “significantly and abnormally accelerated,” and the ability for neural circuitry to effectively adjust breathing rates was impaired. The researchers concluded: “Our findings thus demonstrate that a maternal exposure to TiO2 NPs during pregnancy affects the normal development and operation of the respiratory centers in progeny.”

Since then, there has been a few animal studies suggesting titanium dioxide is connected to cancer. A 2017 study in Scientific Reports, for instance, found that rats with titanium dioxide in their diet had impaired immune systems, which could contribute to autoimmune diseases and colorectal cancer.

Titanium IV oxide is also used in the pharmaceutical industry. It is often used as a coating for medications to improve their stability and appearance. Titanium dioxide helps to protect medications from degradation caused by light, moisture, and other environmental factors. It is commonly used in tablets, capsules, and other oral dosage forms to improve their shelf life and effectiveness.
