Rubber gaskets, commonly used in various industrial applications, serve the purpose of preventing oil leakage and maintaining the integrity of machinery by creating a barrier between two or more components.

In this kind of seal, wider tolerances are possible between the OD of the seal and the seal housing. Irregularities of the housing surface can be taken up by the resilient rubber layer on the outside of the seal. However, the rubber covered seal can be blown out under high pressure in a reciprocating application whereas, with a metal case, there is no such danger.

What is an Oil Seal?

Put a wooden block or a piece of large tube against the seal and gently tap it squarely into the housing until it is fully home. Refit the timing cover, if removed.

The perfect solution to this is to always use an oil seal that fits properly; the right size of the seal should be used. And in other cases, backup devices should be used to avoid the buildup of clearance gaps within the mating edges.

Silicone 

The design of high-pressure oil seals is also critical to their performance. The seals must be able to maintain a tight fit between the moving parts, while also allowing for some flexibility to accommodate minor variations in the shaft or housing. This balance between rigidity and flexibility is essential for ensuring a reliable seal under high pressure conditions.
