Lip seals are passive mechanical devices used to close the shaft exit points on electric motors and other rotating machinery. The seals are made to keep moisture and dust out of the machinery’s inner constructions while having little to no impact on how well they work.

Silicone oil seals, which are also called VMQ, have strong resistance to temperature, which ranges from -140 degrees Fahrenheit to 392 degrees Fahrenheit. They are also resistant to ozone, light, and harsh weather conditions. Silicone is frequently used in hydraulics and pneumatics, as well as in the food and medical industries. Due to the material’s transparency and flexibility, it’s commonly chosen for the manufacturing of o-rings, molded parts, and flat seals, as well as electrical insulators.

The seal shown in Fig. 14.2 is a relatively simple design; most automotive seals are more complex. Dust lips are often used to keep outside contaminants away from the oil lip seals; such seals thus have undercuts that make demolding more difficult. Fluoroelastomer compounds used for such undercut shapes must have reasonably high elongation at break at molding temperatures to avoid tearing the part during demolding. Since both compression and injection molding methods are used, suppliers of fluoroelastomers for shaft-seal applications often must provide different versions of the same polymer composition-medium to high viscosity for compression molding, and low to medium viscosity for injection molding. Different precompounds may be necessary to accommodate relatively long compression-molding times at low temperature and very short injection-molding times at high temperature.
