Another important property of Chinese anatase titanium dioxide is its photocatalytic activity, which enables it to break down organic pollutants and harmful chemicals when exposed to light. This makes it an attractive choice for applications in environmental remediation, such as air and water purification systems. Additionally, its photocatalytic properties have also been studied for use in self-cleaning surfaces, such as windows and building facades, where it can help to reduce maintenance costs and keep surfaces looking clean.

The disadvantage of Titanium Dioxide is that it's not cosmetically elegant, meaning it's a white, unspreadable mess. Sunscreens containing Titanium Dioxide are often hard to spread on the skin and they leave a disturbing whitish tint. The cosmetic industry is, of course, really trying to solve this problem and the best solution so far is using nanoparticles. The itsy-bitsy Nano-sized particles improve both spreadability and reduce the whitish tint a lot, but unfortunately, it also introduces new health concerns. 

In a 2022 study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, scientists wanted to examine the effects of titanium dioxide as a food additive on atherosclerosis in mice. (Atherosclerosis refers to a hardening of the arteries.) Researchers fed mice 40 mg/kg of the food additive every day for 4 months, and found that it not only altered gut microbiota but also led to a significantly increased atherosclerotic lesion area, especially in animals that consumed a high-choline western diet (HCD).

Titanium dioxide can also be found in dairy products to make them whiter and brighter … like frosting or cottage cheese, Stoiber told USA TODAY, adding that the additive is used in other products – such as food or beverage instant mixes – as an anti-caking agent.
