It is commonly used in industries such as paint, paper, plastics, and rubber as a filler and pigment. The manufacturing process of calcium carbonate involves extracting the mineral from quarries or mines, crushing and grinding it into a fine powder, and then purifying it through various chemical processes.

Titanium dioxide is often used as a UV absorber and pigment in cosmetic products, such as foundations, lipsticks, creams, sunscreens and other skin care products. It helps protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays by blocking them, while providing a brightening effect.

Still many experts say the body of research does not support the current health concerns being expressed about titanium dioxide.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have also been found in human placentae and in infant meconium, indicating its ability to be transferred from mother to fetus.
